The design is conceived as a stand-alone building that attempts not only to enlarge the access to public sanitary facilities but also to make toilets’ a secondary matter. The site consists of an existing public toilet block in the centre of Kaiserslautern, whose very sparse facilities are mostly out of function. The shape is intended to symbolise a thin shell that is only loaded by compressive forces. Generative design is used to select the optimal and suitable shape which is broken down into planar modules in the second step. The flatness, pure compressive stress of the panels and its checkerboard pattern allows to sufficient join the individual modules with female/male joints. They can be joined together later on the construction site.
